While the new dictionary lacks the depth of its competitors, it is clearly equal to them in terms of reach and surpasses them in terms of currency. Vancouver Community College has compiled this glossary of 5000 Canadian legal and judicial terms in plain English and their equivalents in six other languages (Chinese, Farsi, Punjabi, Russian, Spanish, Vietnamese). These tools are unique to legal research and are great places to start your research. Authoritative texts, such as those published by Irwin Law, are an important and authoritative source of legal definitions, particularly with regard to new legal terminology. Legal dictionaries define legal terms and common words with a particular legal meaning. Provide simple definitions of rights-related words, including more difficult legal or Latin expressions. The CED and Halsbury`s are two large legal encyclopaedias covering key elements in all areas of law, with many citations on relevant case law and legislation. The CED is part of the Westlaw Canada database and Halsbury`s is part of the Lexis Advance Quicklaw database. Both can be searched or preferably searched, allowing you to see how the different subthemes fit together.
