Within twelve months of the completion of the construction service, the new police station «very badly agreed» on a code, and extensive remediation work was required to address settlement problems. Except in the most basic circumstances, codes of ethics do not provide «answers» or «solutions» as such to the ethical dilemmas faced by engineers, but they do provide benchmarks that can be useful in helping engineers assess the circumstances they encounter and identify possible approaches that can be taken to address the ethical issues at stake. This article attempts to address three fundamental questions in engineering ethics; (1) engineering ethics education, (2) ethical decision-making in the practice of the profession, and (3) protection of engineers` right to make ethical choices. An engineer recently employed by the design office prepared the design of the sprinkler system. As the employee was not familiar with NFPA requirements, he read some sections of the standards, but did not have enough time to pay close attention to all the details given the other responsibilities of the project. An engineer reviewed the design of the employee`s finished sprinkler system. Although the engineer did not conduct a detailed examination, he found the design satisfactory. Clearly, engineering ethics is a subject that goes to the heart of engineering practice. It reflects the customs, habits and values of the engineering profession and reflects the proven experience, spiciness and education of practising engineers. In a way, a codex is a «chronology» for the profession because it reflects the conventions, routines, and patterns of the profession, but changes as these conventions, routines, and patterns change. It does not matter whether the client requested the seal or stamp or not. The analysis or drawing must be sealed or stamped if it is a technical achievement. Internal analyses or drawings within a business or partnership do not need to be sealed or stamped, although they may be sealed or stamped at the discretion of the engineer or organization.

Non-technical work such as financial analysis or contracts cannot be stamped or sealed with an engineer`s seal. It is illegal for a practising engineer to endanger public safety in any way. This means that an engineer must hold himself to the highest moral level of conduct or suffer litigation if a technical system breaks down and causes harm to the public, including a service technician. Violations of engineering law are often sufficient grounds for taking enforcement action, which may include suspension or loss of licenses and fines. It could also result in imprisonment if it is proven that gross negligence played a role in an incident that resulted in the loss of life. In the United States of America and Canada, engineering is governed by the laws of states or provinces. Many engineers who work for U.S. companies practice engineering in a foreign country.

It goes without saying that ethical practices outside the United States can vary widely. The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) is designed to prevent U.S. companies from bribing foreign officials to receive favorable treatment when accepting contracts. Although hefty fines have been imposed on companies for violating the FCPA, many companies doing business in a foreign country view fines as a cost of operation if the fines represent a small percentage of the profits to be made. [13] Blame can often be attributed to ignorance, misunderstanding and, in some extreme cases, indifference or negligence. New Brunswick, NJ: Rutgers University Press. The engineering firm entrusted the business to one of its employees, a professional engineer with experience in steel construction, who completed the structural design of the plant. The client had informed the architect that the second floor of the plant was to be used for manufacturing and storage purposes and that forklifts would be widely used both in production and in the second-floor warehouse. The architect transmitted this information to the design office. The engineer employed designed a steel frame and determined that the second stage should be a concrete-steel composite, essentially made of concrete poured on a steel deck and containing a light steel mesh. The specifications for the steel deck, concrete thickness and steel mesh were set out in the engineer`s design and taken from the engineer`s design charts in his company library that had been published by a company that manufactured and supplied the steel deck. Technical codes of ethics are the rules of practice that provide a framework for ethical decisions based on historical case studies that have shown that poorly made decisions lead to negative outcomes. While technical codes of ethics are similar across disciplines, each may have a slightly different historical perspective.

Nevertheless, there are strong similarities between all technical codes of ethics.
